A passion for baking brought a sweet life to Marlene and Walter Goetzeler. As co-owners of Freeport Bakery for the past 28 years, the Goetzelers share a love of baking forged the first day they met. The story might have been written for Hollywood. Walter, raised by a prominent baking family in Bavaria, wandered into a San Diego bookshop run by Marlene. He was looking for a map. She wanted a German tutor. The fit was perfect. Love blossomed. Decades later, the duo dishes up incredible specialty cakes and delicious desserts—including Danish pastries, muffins, pies, cookies and savory items—from scratch at their full-line bakery with the help of 50 staff members. Freeport Bakery is an iconic Land Park location with a vintage-inspired interior detailed with as much care as the baked goods they create. Customers drive miles to retrieve custom orders. On top of all that, Marlene serves as president of the Retail Bakers of America, which offers hands-on workshops, bakery tours, educational classes, local vendor displays and annual road shows to connect baking aficionados across the country. Many of the best Sacramento restaurants serves their baked goods.
