Biba Ristorante Italiano
Featured: Inside Sacramento – Midtown-Sutter
Legendary chef, cookbook author and restaurant owner Biba Caggiano has bustled nonstop between kitchen and dining area, greeting guests and checking pasta dishes at the elegant Sacramento restaurant for 32 years. Caggiano and husband, Vince, a physician renowned for his work in oncology, have made this special place a component of their home and life. For a generation, Biba has set the standard for professional service—including nightly live piano thanks to musicians Rich O’Day (shown), Claudette Stone and Reggie Graham—the best seasonal ingredients and exquisite preparation and presentation. These days, Vince oversees the wine list while Biba directs the kitchen and front of the house, somehow simultaneously. Born in Bologna, Italy, Biba arrived in Sacramento with her husband in 1969. She entertained friends at home with recipes liberated from her mother’s kitchen. She was persuaded to stage informal cooking classes, which expanded to television segments and cookbooks—nine volumes are currently in print. Biba Ristorante and the creative force behind it are both Sacramento treasures.
