Ducklings rescued from storm drain
Senior storm water utility worker Francisco Garcia is a neighborhood hero for coming to the rescue earlier this year when four ducklings fell into a drainage inlet in Carmichael and were trapped for a few hours.
After learning about the ducklings, Garcia—without hesitation—climbed into the manhole and located the four baby birds. He got one out within minutes and, after a few failed attempts, pushed out the last three.
Neighbors say Garcia was professional and had a smile on his face the entire time. That would be expected since a true hero never ducks his responsibility.
SAFER SIDEWALKS
The Cottage Way Sidewalk Infill Project will improve pedestrian accessibility by filling in sidewalk gaps at several locations along Cottage Way in Arden-Arcade.
The project includes installing approximately 180 feet of sidewalk along the north side of Cottage Way east of Fulton Avenue, and 800 feet of sidewalk and street lights along the north side of Cottage Way from west of Trimble Way to east of Terrace Drive.
Residence, business, pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained during construction. The project should be completed in October.

SEWER WORK
The Sacramento Area Sewer District is continuing the Mission Trunk Sewer Project to ensure reliable sewer service for the community.
The trunk line follows the Mission Avenue corridor, beginning near American River College and ending downstream near the American River. Phase 1 started earlier this year. Phase 2 is expected to finish in October.
Most work takes place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., although night and weekend work may be necessary. SASD is doing everything possible to minimize construction impacts, such as traffic slowdowns, parking restrictions and road closures. Sewer service will continue uninterrupted.

WEST ARDEN ARCADE
Last month, Sacramento County’s Office of Planning and Environmental Review hosted online public-engagement sessions for the Re-Envision West Arden Arcade Project.
During the project’s 16-month planning process, the county is working with the community to generate ideas and concepts to create safer and more appealing walking, rolling, bicycling and driving conditions, with emphasis on equity and environmental sustainability, in West Arden Arcade.
The project area is bounded by Cottage Way, Northrop Avenue, Howe Avenue and Watt Avenue. Anyone who lives, works or plays in, travels through or visits West Arden Arcade is encourage to participate in the project, funded through the Caltrans Sustainable Communities Grant Program.
To help build interest, decals have been placed on sidewalks at intersections within the project area directing the public to the project website—planning.saccounty.net—for more information.
COVID CHANGE UPS
National Night Out has been rescheduled for Oct. 6. This is a time to build neighborhood camaraderie, facilitate a safer and more caring community, enhance residents’ relationship with law enforcement and, most importantly, send a message to criminals that our neighborhoods are organized and on alert to report suspicious activity and crime.
Hopefully, safe conditions will prevail to allow me, along with sheriff deputies, Metro Fire responders and CHP officers, to stop by a number of National Night Out gatherings.
This month, the American River Parkway Foundation traditionally holds its annual “Great American River Clean Up” to help maintain the natural habitat along 23 miles of parkway.
While the large-scale volunteer effort is on hold this year, the foundation is asking all parkway visitors to bring a bag and pick up litter during September. You can leave your bag in a designated receptacle on the parkway or take it
