The Waterboy’s weekend gourmet dinners to go

By Cecily Hastings

Our family has been picking up East Sac’s One Speed pizzas and salads to go for dinners. I often thought of The Waterboy, chef Rick Mahan’s shuttered elegant Midtown restaurant.

Much to my delight in my in-box this week was news and details of their new Pop-Up Weekend Gourmet Dinners to go.

Here’s the deal: a Different 3-course meal each Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. All include soup, main course and dessert. It generously feeds four and is $120, plus gratuity. Preorder by calling the restaurant at 916-873-8340 from 11-2 pm Wednesdays and Thursdays. You pay in advance with a credit card.

Our delicious meal included potato-mushroom soup with spring garlic butter, Tagliata with Snake River Farms Bavette steak on Soil Born Farms arugula, along with roasted onions and fingerling potatoes, rosemary, olive oil & Reggiano Parmesan cheese. Desert was sweet and tangy Meyer Lemon Cream Puffs. We added a beautiful and delicious charcuterie platter for $24 as an appetizer. If you want a bottle of wine added they’d take care of it for you, also.

I drove up and Chef Mahan himself delivered the expertly packed meal to my car. We could not hug as we usually do, but it was good to see him and his staff working.

At our home it was served hot and as easy as plating for the table. After a frantic two weeks working long hours and eating on the go, the relaxing and nutritious meal was a terrific reminder of the good life we so easily enjoyed just a few weeks ago.

Get your order in early as they sold out this past weekend. The Waterboy is at 2000 Capitol Avenue.
