Increased euthanasia rates, animals released without spaying/neutering, healthy cats turned away, 1,000-plus service calls awaiting a response.

Empty Old Sac Waterfront Site

Rio City Cafe closed after landlord—the city—failed to maintain outdoor dining deck. City loses $250,000 annual rent from mothballed restaurant. Eighty jobs lost.

Southside Pool Closure

Public pool serves low income and minority residents. Closed by city for repairs in 2022. As Assembly member, Mayor Kevin McCarty secured $500,000 to offset repairs. Still closed.

Update
Sacramento’s Southside Park Pool has reopened for summer 2025 after being closed for about three years for major repairs and renovations. The city completed extensive work to replace aging infrastructure, and with funding secured in part through then-Assemblymember (now Mayor) Kevin McCarty, the pool welcomed swimmers again in June 2025, restoring the only city-run pool in downtown Sacramento for families and the community to enjoy.

Pedestrian Deaths

More than 250 people killed by vehicles since 2017, when city adopted “Vision Zero” to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries on city streets by 2027.

American River Levee

Up to 700 trees and miles of habitat face destruction on American River Army Corps project, threatening wildlife and recreation. Residents want less disruptive approach to flood control.

Tiny Homes for Unhoused

City, county and state officials acquired 100 tiny houses for homeless people in 2022, but the dwellings sit empty due to red tape and location disputes.

Update
Under Mayor Kevin McCarty’s leadership, Sacramento has marked a significant milestone in its homelessness response with the completion of the expansion of the Roseville Road shelter campus, adding roughly 135 tiny homes — including a new cluster of 100 units — to provide safe, interim housing for people experiencing homelessness. These units, fully equipped with electricity, heating and air conditioning and supported by on-site services in partnership with local providers, represent an effort to offer dignified, cost-effective alternatives to traditional shelters and encampments

Bicycle Bridge over I-5

City ordered $12 million bike bridge at I-5 and Riverside demolished because of substandard concrete and rebar. City won’t explain why quality control procedures didn’t work.

Update
The Pocket Bicycle Bridge has finally opened after a long delay caused by construction and engineering issues that kept the newly built bridge closed from the start. With those problems resolved, the long-anticipated crossing now provides a safe, dedicated connection for cyclists and pedestrians, linking the Pocket area to the Sacramento River Parkway and completing a project years in the making.

Sac River Levee Public Access

Levee parkway and bike trail promised to Pocket-Greenhaven community in 1975, still not completed. City fearful of lawsuits by handful of anti-river access residents.
