Taylor’s Market & Kitchen

Featured: Inside Sacramento – Land Park
2019

Opened in 1962 by Roy Taylor and Ed Schell, Taylor’s Market is a gem in the residential neighborhood where Land Park and Curtis Park meet. The subsequent generation of owners, Ed’s son Kevin and friend Danny Johnson (hired as a butcher at age 19 in 1983) dedicated themselves to Taylor’s reputation for service and quality. A remodel in 1988 brought new displays for local produce, fine wines and the best meats and seafood in town, plus partnership with local produce purveyor Aki Kushida and son Bruce, who still manages the fresh produce department. Roots run deep among the staff. Store manager Dave Hunter was 17 when he went to work at Taylor’s. Meat department manager Paul Carras grew up in the neighborhood and started his career at age 15. Felicia Johnson, daughter of owners Danny and Kathy Johnson, is Taylor’s cheese monger. Next door, Taylor’s Kitchen features a seasonal menu created by chef Justin Lower with a focus on fresh local foods. Desserts are created in-house. The wine list is selected by master sommelier candidate Keith Fergel. Part market, part fine dining, Taylor’s is a Sacramento restaurant icon.
