Sotiris Kolokotronis will be honored May 7 with The Salvation Army Spirit of Giving Award, a recognition of the developer’s four decades of community-first construction and philanthropy.

Born in Greece, Kolokotronis came to the U.S. for education and opportunity. After studies in economics at University of Athens and UC Berkeley, he founded his company, SKK Developments, in 1987. The company quickly became a force in land development, mixed-use projects and urban revitalization.

Under Kolokotronis, SKK delivered thousands of residential units—single-family homes to multifamily apartments—and commercial space. His portfolio spans billions of dollars in projects, with an emphasis on sustainability, design and socially responsible development.

Kolokotronis is a catalyst for Midtown and Downtown revitalization. The Mansion Apartments, The Press at Midtown Quarter, Q19 Midtown and the Fremont Building turned underused parcels into thriving destinations. His infill projects brought housing and enhanced street life and economic activity. He enlivens the urban core’s vitality.

Kolokotronis’ impact goes beyond bricks and mortar. His developments are always intertwined with community building. SKK supports nonprofits, sponsors charitable events, and integrates public art and local partnerships. Kolokotronis believes the private sector has a responsibility to strengthen the community’s social fabric.

This ethos is reflected in his record of civic engagement. He has served on many boards and advisory groups spanning social services, housing, education and arts. These include The Salvation Army Advisory Board, Habitat for Humanity Sacramento, Sacramento Urban League, Sacramento Symphony Association, Sacramento Children’s Home Crisis Nursery, Families First and Sacramento Library Foundation.

“The Salvation Army plays a vital role in Sacramento by providing practical support and hope to individuals and families facing hardships,” Kolokotronis says. “They have been a pillar in our community, filling gaps in our social service systems and functioning as a frontline provider that stabilizes households and individuals in crisis.”

His commitment extends to youth development, cultural enrichment and environmental stewardship. Through support of schools, arts organizations and community planning, Kolokotronis finds opportunities for young people, supports arts access, and creates conversations around smart growth and inclusive development.

The Salvation Army Spirit of Giving Award aligns with values Kolokotronis embodies: generosity, leadership and service. His partnership with The Salvation Army and other nonprofits reflects his respect for organizations that meet people where they are and provides practical, compassionate support to those in need.

In honoring Kolokotronis, The Salvation Army recognizes a man whose success has been matched by his desire to give back.
