Federalist Public House

Marvin and Bridgette Maldonado are in pursuit of the perfect pizza. The Florin High School sweethearts and owners of Federalist Public House—the infinitely cool farm-to-fork Sacramento restaurant in the alley between Capitol Avenue and N Street, 20th and 21st streets—spent a year researching pizza before opening their eatery in December 2014. The couple’s three sons served as taste testers. The menu features a variety of signature wood-fired pizzas under the direction of chef Shannon McElroy, plus a rotating selection of local craft beers, wine, nitro coffee and kombucha served at communal tables that run alongside a bocce court. The restaurant and pub are housed in giant steel shipping containers—a design-driven idea from Marvin—in the converted backyard of a Victorian house built in the Federalist style, which inspired the restaurant’s name.
